2026 Water Valley Watermelon Carnival: Come Home for the Weekend

There are summer weekends—and then there is Watermelon Carnival weekend.

On Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, Water Valley will welcome neighbors, former residents, visitors, vendors and families back for one of the community’s most treasured traditions: the 2026 Water Valley Watermelon Carnival.

It is a weekend filled with music, food, fireworks, arts and crafts, contests, old friends and enough cold watermelon to make a Mississippi summer afternoon a little sweeter.

A Water Valley Tradition Nearly a Century in the Making

The first Watermelon Carnival was held on August 27, 1931, during the Great Depression. Local leaders saw an opportunity to celebrate the watermelons grown in this area while bringing much-needed activity into town.

According to the Water Valley Chamber of Commerce, that first celebration drew an estimated 12,000 to 20,000 people. The event continued for nine years, paused during World War II and was revived in 1980.

Today, the Carnival once again welcomes an estimated 20,000 attendees during the first weekend in August. It has grown into much more than a festival. For many people, it is a homecoming.

It is when old classmates find one another in the crowd, grandparents introduce another generation to favorite traditions, downtown businesses welcome a rush of visitors and practically every conversation begins with, “Well, how have y’all been?”

What to Expect This Weekend

The Carnival officially runs Friday and Saturday, with activities centered around City Park and downtown Water Valley.

Friday, July 31

Friday evening traditionally brings the official opening of Carnival weekend, along with live music, the street dance and the fireworks display over City Park.

There is something special about watching downtown fill up as the sun goes down, hearing music carry across Central Street and seeing families settle in for the fireworks. It feels less like attending an event and more like the whole town has moved its front porch into the park.

Saturday, August 1

Saturday brings a full day of Watermelon Carnival activity, including many of the traditions people look forward to every year:

• Arts and crafts vendors
• Food vendors
• Live entertainment
• The annual 3K walk and run
• Antique and classic cars
• Watermelon contests and games
• Barbecue competition activities
• Children’s activities
• Parades and downtown attractions
• Free watermelon slices

• Bring water and sunscreen. Mississippi does not take Carnival weekend off from being hot.
• Keep a light rain plan handy. The current forecast includes the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.
• Carry a little cash. Some smaller vendors may have limited electronic payment options.
• Give yourself time to visit the local shops, restaurants and businesses that help make Water Valley special.
• Check the National Weather Service forecast and official Carnival updates before leaving home.

Most importantly, slow down long enough to enjoy the people. Carnival weekend is at its best when there is time for an unexpected conversation or two.
